Hello from Braassemermeer lake. It was chilly this morning with ice on the windscreen but we are now basking in glorious sunshine. We have been busy applying our sponsorship decals and had a short training session this morning before coming in for lunch. The kids are about to launch in light and shifty conditions with a max 12 knot breeze forecast. First warning signal is 1:55. Everybody appears happy apart from the parents wanting to order some concrete and have the pool at the campsite filled in overnight! No change there then.
Race one, first flight under way approaching the windward mark, looks like left side paying on first beat, GBR in position 2, 4 9 & 10. Wind shifting to the right from the clubhouse balcony at the mo.
So for some chat while waiting for news from the water. Mr Holman kept to his usual time keeping schedule and delivered Arran 10 minutes before the first signal. Alan is on the water without tea, not good. Club house looking like a gunship with a large lens perched on the corner with Andy Platt attached to the end of it. Rest of the parents glued to the youth results.
Good morning from a darker Braass. Results from yesterday are in, GBR have 4 in the top 10, La Brouche in 4th, Holman in 6th, Clapp in 7th, Whiteley in 9th. No doubt about it, this is hard sailing. There are some big shifts on the course which can see you doing well one moment and not the next. Some results worth a mention is Max Moyles in 28th and a 10 year old Rys Lewis in 50th. First warning is at 9:55 so an earlier start this morning saw the campsite go very quiet around 9:30 last night. The kids seem very enthusiastic and the parents relaxed which has all the right ingredients for great team spirit.
Not much news from the water, first flight have rounded windward mark, second Flight about to go on a black flag. Sounds similar to yesterday, shifty, tough startlines with hovering skills being put to the test.
We are at the club, glorious sunshine but no wind so we are held ashore. Have seen some Easter bunnies around the club so the children will be given chocolate eggs which is a really nice touch. They normally throw them off the pontoon as they sail out. Team GBR had a big briefing on the balcony and we sang Happy Birthday to Pete Banham who is 50 today!! Lunch on the American spectator boat for him if they race. So yesterday results, we are holding 4 of the top ten positions with Holman in 3rd, Labrouche in 4th, Calder in 5th, Clapp in 10th. Wrigley close behind in 14th, Jo Burns is in 20th with two bullets but a cruel bfd in the final race of the day. Jamie Calder had a first in his last race so GBR sailors pulling out the stops.
Not much happening here though the a Magic Marine shop proving popular. Mrs Calder has found a mannequin that looks like Iain and has less to say for himself. Flags lifeless.
Breath of wind arriving with a small fluttering of flags. Some slow moving clouds coming in from the West. Robbie and Vagelis keeping kids occupied in the boat park, having spotted an Oppy upside down with the daggerboard poking out it is obviously getting technical. Parents trying to keep the kids from getting involved in the Belgium game of how many kids can we get in a rib! At least it is not mine!
Fleet launched eventually at 1230 and sat, and sat and sat waiting for the wind to steady in a consistent direction. Eventually the first flight got away at 1436. Jo Burns 3rd at windward mark. Flight two has 2 general recalls and then started under the black flag at 1520 - sadly this has caught our several GBR sailors including Martin Wrigley, Max Moyles and Arthur Brown who will have to use this as their discard. Flight 3 got away at 1437we thing there were some black glags more in a moment.
More news, Joe Burns is now 4th - Gabby really tense!! (joke) Milo in third in the third flight. Meanwhile it has been a day of pleasant physicality here with most doing a circumnavigation of the lake by bike or feet. Well done parents!
The sun has gone in, but every cloud has a silver lining and the wind has picked up.lets hope there working hard because the wind is like someone is throwing shards of ice at you. but this has not stopped Milo (tank) from finishing THIRD!!plus in the second start Rhys Lewis was in another third at the windward mark.and guess what: David LaBrouche, second... !!!!!
clouds have formed. we hope(as we must)the rain will stay away today(bit of rhyming there) tomorrow the forecast is for stong winds and heavy rain.... whoopee?? not the best day ever for for our lighter sailors.
our american collegues who are flying the flag for the U.S of A,have informed us that their "tracking satelitte" has all the U.S sailors congregating at the start. intelligence leads us to beleive that we will soon be in sequence for race 7.
in race three Dan Whiteley has claimed first place!! closely followed by the David LaBrouche in an amazing second race. to summarise race 6.. whoopp, whoopp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! team gbr had two firsts, a second and a third!!! yayy
great, they have just started race 7, but looking out of the window the flag poles are bending even futher. its gonna be a tough one. i think "hike untill your sick" will be the phrase for this race.
the first flight has started and Marin Wrigley is so far winning the race up the windward leg!! lets hope it stays that way because it will overcome the dissapoiontment of his black flag in the last race.
Flight two has experienced something quite unusual. The flight left the line OK under black flag following a general recall. However halfway down the first beat the race was abandoned and the sailors called back to the start area.
We are only guessing here but it is thought that for wehatever reasons the flags did not come down on time and were left up after the start. For the race officer this is a difficult call but the race can only be abandoned and run again!
Poor sailors in this flight and the next as it is getting very cold!
Race 7 flight 1 have just finished and we did not get out 1,2 as two Belgian sailors have managed to get into second and third place BUT Martin Wrigley has won his race!
Well here we are on Easter Monday, the wind is brisk from the South West and forecast to be 15kts gusting 18kts. Rain is forecast but so far it has held out. The fleet are now divided into Gold, Silver and Bronze and we Team GBR have representation across all three. The race programme is for two races today and the fleet should get these in. Naturally with nearly 90 fairly eaually matched sailors in each fleet the start will be very competitive! Oh yes I suspect a few black flags today!
At the second windward mark in Gold Fleet Race 10 Dan Whiteley is leading followed in second by David LaBrouche. Come on lets get a Brit 1,2 or maybe a 1,2,3!
Wind has picked up a notch or two so it is going to be tough going out there. Its also raining! they will be pleased... :[ dan whitley 1st And David LaBrouche in second, Milo Gill Taylor is about 9th well done!! i heard some more come through on the radio that were above 15th but i couldn't get the names . we are doing well !!
it is blowing allot out there if i were to say the least they better be wearing there thermals or they will be incased in blocks of ice when they come in.
race 9 was a realllly gooood race for the team i think we have a good chance of winning the event. all the sailors have come in and are having there " pasta in a pot...s "
